The Great Escape was from Stalag Luft III. But have you heard the full backstory of this prison camp?

 

It is undeniable that the history of the camp actually drove the prisoners to succeed in the escape: just a little earlier, another escape, dubbed the 'Wooden Horse' Escape, had taken place. A small group of men hid inside exercise equipment, ironically being the saddle, used in gymnastics, and made it out after it was taken away with faulty parts.

Another thing that also passes the reader by is that the Commandant of the camp was actually humane, unlike the SS and Gestapo camps: this camp was a Luftwaffe, Air Force Camp, and for some reason was run much more humanely. Hopefully this has given you an insight into the camp itself, and maybe the camp differs in reality than in imagination.
